When people think about a performance exhaust, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the sound. The material it is made from often gets overlooked, though it has a big effect on how long the system lasts, how it performs and how much maintenance it will need over time.
The two materials we get asked about most are mild steel and stainless steel. Both have their place. It depends on the vehicle, how often it is driven plus what the owner expects from it. A weekend classic that spends most of its time in a garage has a very different need compared to a daily driver that sees winter roads every year.
We’ve seen plenty of perfectly good exhausts replaced long before they needed to be, simply because the material was wrong for the job. Spending a little more time researching at the start can sometimes save replacing sections later. Especially if the car is used throughout the year.
Mild steel or stainless steel?
There is no single answer that suits every vehicle. Each material offers different strengths.
- Mild steel is usually the more affordable option. It is a good choice for restorations, budget builds or vehicles that cover fewer miles
- Stainless steel offers much better resistance to corrosion. It copes with moisture, road salt plus changing weather far better than mild steel
- Overall, performance is usually influenced more by the exhaust design than the material itself, although stainless systems often stay in better condition for longer because corrosion is less of an issue
One thing worth remembering is that condensation builds up inside every exhaust. Short journeys can make it worse because the system never gets hot enough to dry out properly. We often see corrosion starting from the inside rather than the outside, particularly on cars used for lots of local trips.
Looking beyond the initial cost
Price is only one part of the decision. A cheaper exhaust that needs replacing every few years can end up costing more over the life of the vehicle. On the other hand, fitting the most expensive system available is not always necessary either.
Think about how the car is actually used. If it spends every day outside, sees plenty of motorway miles plus gets driven through winter, a stainless steel system usually makes good sense. If it is a classic that only comes out for shows on sunny weekends, mild steel could easily provide years of reliable service.

A well-designed exhaust built from the right material will continue performing as expected for much longer. That means fewer headaches, less time underneath the car plus more time enjoying the drive.
